SSKI (saturated solution of potassium iodide): Everyone should have some in their medicine cabinet.

John Miller

Potassium iodide is probably most well known as a protector against radiation poisoning, often being handed out in tablet form to people after a nuclear meltdown. In solution, it is known as SSKI and is a remarkable substance that has many uses from treating contaminated water to getting rid of pimples and cold sores. I would like to share some of these uses with you so that you can enjoy the same benefits of SSKI that I do.

1. Water Purification
SSKI effectively kills bacteria and viruses living in water, and can be used to safely treat unknown water before drinking. For this reason, it is an indispensable companion when traveling in foreign countries where the water may not always be clean. Just add about 5 drops of SSKI per liter of water, mix it, and let it sit for 3-5 minutes before drinking.

2. Airline Sinusitis and Respiratory Infections
Another use for SSKI while traveling is to protect against sinusitis that can develop from breathing recycled, germ-filled air on airplanes. If you already have an infection, it can help to clear it up faster too. All you need is a small nasal spray bottle like the kind that saline nasal sprays come in. Add 20 drops of SSKI and fill the rest of the bottle with purified water.

3. Pimples
For those of us who don't have the perfectly airbrushed, flawless skin we so often see in magazines, there arises now and then, usually at the wrong time, a pimple. If you want to get rid of it fast, then SSKI is your friend. It works best if the skin has been broken first, so pop that zit then rub a small amount of SSKI into it every hour or two and it will be gone in 24-48 hours. WARNING: SSKI can stain skin and clothing. Stains on the skin will fade quickly once application is stopped, but stains on clothing can be permanent so be careful with it around your good clothes.

4. Cold Sores
SSKI should be applied 3-4 times each day to the affected area where it works by killing the viruses directly and by drying up the area. For more information on getting rid of cold sores read 3 Steps to Kill a Cold Sore Fast

5. Infected Hangnails and Cuticles I don't know about you but whenever the seasons change, I get cracked skin around my fingertips and inevitably one of them gets infected. My solution is to use a 50/50 mixture of SSKI and DMSO and to rub it into the affected area several times per day. The infection usually clears up within 48 hours.

6. Toenail Fungus
Anti-fungal drugs are dangerous and often require monthly liver function tests for safety. Personally, I wouldn't want to take a drug that could possibly fry my liver just to cure a toenail fungus. Luckily SSKI is not only effective at killing bacteria and viruses but also fungi. Unfortunately, it may take several months to clear up the infection completely, but it will work. Here, I also recommend using a 50/50 SSKI-DMSO mixture because DMSO helps the SSKI to penetrate the skin and nail. Rub the mixture on, around, and under the toenail several times each day. Remember though that SSKI stains clothing so wear dark colored socks.

7. Vaginal Infections
SSKI can clear up a vaginal infection simply by using 20 to 30 drops mixed with water in a small douche once per day for 5 to 10 days, Again, beware of staining on your clothing.

8. Other
There are other common uses for SSKI such as curing fibrocystic breast disease and ovarian cysts, unclogging arteries, and treating chronic bronchitis and emphysema. However, all of these uses require that you take SSKI internally and over the long term this can interfere with thyroid function. If you are interested in using SSKI internally, I suggest you consult with a physician so that they can monitor your thyroid function.
